Stud Gun Setup Guide for Headed Concrete Anchors and Shear Connectors (Threaded Chuck)

Follow these step-by-step instructions to properly set up your stud gun to weld headed anchor and shar connector studs using a threaded chuck.

This setup works for Truweld, Proweld, Midwest Fasteners, Image and Nelson NS20 stud welder heavy and medium duty guns.
1

STEP 1 - Insert the Connector Stud

Screw the Arc Gun Connector Stud into gun.  The shorter end of the stud is screwed into the gun.

2

STEP 2 - Add the Headed Anchor Chuck

Slide the gun cable eyelet onto the Arc Gun Connector Stud.  Attach the Headed Anchor Chuck into Arc Gun Connector Stud.  Use 2 crescent wrenches to hold the Headed Anchor Chuck when tightening.  Make sure the eyelet stays centered or vertical when it is tightened so the eyelet won’t hang up on the legs later.

3

STEP 3 - Add The Ferrule Grip to the Foot

Screw the Weld Thru Deck Ferrule Grip onto the Weld Thru Deck Foot Assembly.  Choosing the size of the Weld Thru Deck Ferrule Grip depends on the type of ferrule you are using:

Determine Ferrule Grip Size:

3/8" Heavy Duty Ferrules or 1/2" Flat Ferrules: 1/2"

1/2" Heavy Duty Ferrules or 5/8" Flat Ferrules: 5/8"

5/8" Heavy Duty Ferrules or 3/4" Flat Ferrules: 3/4"

3/4" Weld Thru Deck Ferrules or 7/8" Flat Ferrules: 7/8"

7/8" Weld Thru Deck Ferrules or 1" Flat Ferrules: 1"

4

STEP 4 - Make the Foot Assembly

Screw the Arc Legs into the Weld Thru Deck Foot Assembly.  Leave the screws loose until you make your final plunge adjustment.

5

STEP 5 - Insert Stud

Place a stud in the Headed Anchor Chuck.

6

STEP 6 - Add Foot Assembly

Slide the foot assembly into the gun so that a couple inches of the stud stick out past the Weld Thru Deck Ferrule Grip.  Make sure the flat side of the legs are towards the set screw on the gun.  Tighten the screws on the gun that hold the legs.

7

STEP 7 - Center the Stud

Adjust the Foot Assembly so that the stud is centered in the middle of the Weld Thru Deck Ferrule Grip.  Tighten the Arc Leg screws in the foot assembly.

8

Step 8 – Adjust the plunge

Put a ferrule on the end of the stud and make the plunge adjustment.  The plunge is the amount the stud that sticks out past the ferrule grip not including the flux ball.

  • Loosen the leg screws in the gun.
  • Adjust the plunge.
  • Tighten the leg screws in the gun.

Plate, Direct to Beam or Angle Plunge

3/8” & 1/2" Dia: 3/16” – 1/4"

5/8” & 3/4" Dia: 1/4” – 5/16”

7/8” & 1” Dia: 5/16” – 3/8”

Weld Thru Deck Plunge:

3/8" - 1" Dia: 3/8"

Weld Thru Deck Recommendation on Determining the Right Plunge:

Grab another stud and slide the foot assembly so that the amount of the stud sticking out past the ferrule grip is equal to the head of the 2nd stud (3/8”).
